[In a forest, by the river]
[cw: some body horror, other to be added as needed]
[With a cry - full of sudden shock and pain - Xiao Xingchen falls to his knees. Soon, even that is too much to bear, and the side of his arm collides with the ground. His legs refuse to move... but after a moment, he realizes that they refuse to move apart from each other. They feel bound, as if with a tight, burning cord as uncountable pieces of something sharp and smooth jut through his skin. He reaches down to feel what has happened to his lower half, incredulous when he finds that these can only be scales...
He never thought he would feel pain as great as he already had. It isn't as bad as that. However, the bandage on his face fills with blood, overflowing and leading streaks down his face.
Even if his mind whirls with everything that's happening at once, his focus turns back to getting somewhere else. He steadies his breathing the best he can, making as little noise as possible while his ears catch the sound of rushing water.
His fingers claw into the dirt as he pulls himself towards the river. With each pull, he knows that dirt smears against his white robes, no longer immaculately clean as they have always been. However, he can't pay any attention to it like this. Shuanghua, fallen onto the bank beside him, still is at the ready to strike if he makes a sword seal. He's more vulnerable than ever to immortal-binding ropes, however, and the loud cry is sure to attract attention. He doesn't even know if this is what he should do, but regardless of what's happened to him, he'll surely move faster in there than right now.
If he can only get over to the water before anyone else arrives...]

One of those hands quickly lets go to clamp down on his mouth, and there's a slight sensation of webbing between the fingers of it. The person who grabbed him pulls him down further, down towards the bottom, and despite the water rushing around them when he gives a hushed whisper against Xiao Xingchen's ear it's still rather easy to make out the words. ]
Shhh. Stay quiet or they'll hear you.
no subject
That surprise would be enough to repress any urge to struggle out of the person's grip as he's carried, if it had come to him. But as he's lowered into the water, it becomes almost impossible to not thrash around. A moment ago, his best guess had been that he should get to the water, given this new form. Actually being submerged is a terrifying new aspect of it.
It's the fact that he can hear the other figure's voice clearly still that calms him down somewhat, the water not having stifled the sense he's relied on most in recent years. As tense as he is, he holds his breath on instinct, not having much of a choice before whatever the figure refers to has left.
The current pulls at him, loosening the bloodied bandage over his eyes.]
no subject
The movement of the bandage briefly grabs his attention and he reaches out to snag it, not thinking too much about what it is beyond that it's part of this cultivator's outfit and he probably doesn't want to lose it. He's holding Xiao Xingchen from behind to make it easier to cover his mouth, so he doesn't see the empty eye sockets immediately when they're revealed. Even if they were pointed his way, he's staring up towards the river's bank as if trying to see what's up there. ]
"I found these. Never seen 'em red like this but they look and feel right. Let's start a search of the river."
[ Liu Jianghe swears, still quiet, and continues to press his mouth near Xiao Xingchen's ear to let him keep his voice low. ]
We have to get out of here right now. Can you swim yet? Nod or shake your head.
no subject
Gathering up the idea of a fish in his mind, he tries to move his legs - his only, singular leg now - and push himself the best he can through the water. Braced for the pain, he doesn't let out a sound when the sensitive, remade skin stretches and twists within the water as he does his best to move. It dulls his other senses, but he can only trust that this man is helping him and the others pose some sort of threat, so that they need to get away from here.]
no subject
Stay quiet and low. We're going upriver.
[ The hunters are less likely to check upriver. New merfolk tend to either get swept away by the current before they gather their bearings, or try to make a break for the open water of the ocean. The two of them will be easier to catch until they find open water of their own, but it's still worthwhile if there's no one around trying to look for them.
Liu Jianghe doesn't let go of Xiao Xingchen entirely; after all, if Xiao Xingchen gets swept away at this point it's one of the worst things that could happen to him. He keeps a grip on the back of Xiao Xingchen's robes and turns his face into the current, still too preoccupied with escaping their immediate situation to notice anything amiss. With a seemingly-practiced ripple of his body, his crimson-black-scaled tail propels him forwards into the oncoming stream. ]
no subject
Ever since he can remember, Xiao Xingchen had always been the hunter. His prey only included those that caused harm to humans, but he still needed to understand them to track their movements, often needing to think like the creatures to find where they lurked. Unfamiliar as this position is for him, he calls on the experience to tether himself, letting himself act as decisively as he can without falling to panic.
He doesn't have the same ease at the other man, but Xiao Xingchen tries his best to keep his kicks measured instead of letting himself flounder against the water. Long ago, he'd seen fish striving against the current, and he tries to recreate that with his entire body.
So focused on trying to move, he barely notices when he can no longer hold his breath and the water rushes in through his mouth. He coughs as it pours down his throat, and it becomes infinitely more difficult to not panic...]
no subject
Immediately he curses quietly as he hauls Xiao Xingchen close to him again, his free hand going to his neck and feeling there. ]
Don't you have gills?
[ Most everyone who's undergone transformations matching theirs has gotten gills along with it, but there's just enough variation that maybe it's possible this person has...
But Liu Jianghe is now finally staring straight at Xiao Xingchen's face, and missing gills is no longer at the forefront of his mind. ]
Your eyes-?!
[ This person's eyes are completely gone. ]
no subject
His words come out in a pained croak, still forcing down the urge to claw his way back to the surface of the water. The other person can breathe here, just like a fish, so Xiao Xingchen surely has to do the same.]
It's fine... let's hurry...
[The blood clouding the water around where his eyes should be might alarm the man, but that's not important right now.]
no subject
Given the state of the man's eyes, Liu Jianghe isn't disturbed by the blood. Of course there'd be blood. No, it's the slight glint that he catches sight of that really disturbs him, and he reaches out and grabs it just to be certain he's not wrong. The man's voice from before comes back to him.
Never seen 'em red like this
They're tear pearls. ]
Try not to cry right now. I don't--I know that's hard to ask of you, but you have to try not to cry.
[ That's the last thing he says before he tightens his grip on Xiao Xingchen's robes and continues swimming, trying to be a bit more careful with directing Xiao Xingchen now that he knows he can't navigate by sight. If they're leaving pearls behind, someone is going to manage to track them, and sooner rather than later. ]
no subject
More difficult than that, however, is the next words he manages.]
I'll have to hold onto you...
[As much as he doesn't want to slow the man down... with all he has to make sure of at once, completely disoriented, he has no choice but to tamp down any misgivings about that.]
no subject
Alright. I'll get you somewhere safe.
[ The lie flows out as easily as the current rushing around the two of them. Without getting to the deep ocean, there's little place for them to go that's truly "safe" with the current pearl-hunting frenzy. But if it makes him less likely to cry, Liu Jianghe will say whatever lie the man needs to hear. ]
Let your tail relax. The water will make it move back and forth as we swim... don't fight it.
[ He gives a couple powerful kicks of his own tail, and soon the two of them are rushing upstream through the water, only a little slower than they were moving when separated. He positions them so Xiao Xingchen is above and he's underneath as he swims low to the bottom, low enough that his tail or hair occasionally brush against it, weaving a bit to try to keep them in the deepest parts of the river as they go. ]
no subject
It takes a moment of swimming before he can feel like he can actually breathe in the water. He feels like he can get just enough air, but it feels like running atop a mountain. Gasping, he tries to inhale, even if the water still makes him feel like he's drowning.
During this, he manages to keep any blood from escaping his eyelids, pressing tightly enough that he would probably damage any eyes if they actually were there. He certainly won't let whatever is tracking him catch this man, at least...]
no subject
He weaves a little more to avoid the shadow of boats passing above them, and finally the river opens up. They've reached a lake, and on one side there's a bustling town with a lively port, ships coming and going at regular intervals.
Liu Jianghe settles the two of them in an area further from the port, in a place where the lake bed goes a bit deeper and the water is dark. He listens quietly for evidence of humans near enough to overhear them, then once satisfied, finally relaxes his grip on Xiao Xingchen. ]
We can rest here for now. How are you doing? ... Aside from suddenly having a tail instead of legs, and losing your eyes, and all that.
[ His voice is still subdued, but nowhere near as quiet as when he was whispering directly into Xiao Xingchen's ear. ]

How'd the hunts go?
[ Xue Yang asks it with a grin, not really curious about the condition of his fellow trafficker so much as the details of his quarry.
"Not a single hitch. I even got two cultivators. We can probably sell 'em for good money."
There's the clatter of swords as the man sets out the two weapons that he picked up with his catches, and Xue Yang's grin freezes on his face. His throat suddenly goes tight, and at least that makes it a bit easier to put a raspy quality into his voice. He doesn't know whether this is Xiao Xingchen or not, or if it is him, if he's already recognized Xue Yang. ]
Show me the one who had this sword.
no subject
Was it all just a strange, terrible dream? He doesn't have the thought for long. After all, he could usually see again in his dreams.
Unable to see, unable to move--what he feels around him is heightened more than anything before. He might hear better now, as well, but he's far too disoriented to make any sense of the two figures nearby. He can't even realize just how utterly powerless he is right now, half-asleep and half still in disbelief that something like this is really happening. Ropes abrade his skin, burning and digging deeper into him after even a couple of half-hearted attempts to twist free. He also finds that the rope has looped around his head, forming a gag, thick and tied securely enough to keep him from opening his mouth any wider.
Suddenly, he no longer feels the rough blanket on him.
With his fair complexion, it looks like barely any transition to his white scales, with a glimmer like sunlight on the snow. The red ropes stand out in stark contrast, matching the color of the pearls near his face. Without his eyes - barely able to even turn his head - he can only lie there, as still as if he hadn't been awoken.]
no subject
It's really him.
Xue Yang's eyes catch on the white tail replacing Xiao Xingchen's lower body and he stares for a moment, as if expecting it to be a trick of the light and disappear the next second. But no, it's definitely there, and there's even pearls next to his head, red as his blood tears like they're there to underscore the truth.
He feels something tighten in his chest to match his throat.
Stupid Xiao Xingchen with his stupid bandage. Is he conscious; is he asleep? Has he already heard Xue Yang speaking with his own voice?
There's red marks on Xiao Xingchen's skin where the robes are wrapped tight and Xue Yang decides which way he's gambling. ]
I'm taking this one.
[ He speaks with his disguised voice.
The other trafficker gives him an odd look.
"What? He's a cultivator. Sell 'im, he's not worth the trouble. Pretty too; I bet someone'll take 'im for a good price. I need to make money too ya know--" ]
I'm taking him for my quota. If he doesn't cry then I'll sell him and you'll get your cut. Give him to me.
[ There's another pause, then the man audibly shrugs.
"A'ight. I warned ya."
A moment later Xiao Xingchen is covered again, but this time it's more like he's being completely wrapped in a blanket as the man roughly bundles Xiao Xingchen and picks him up out of the cart. From his strength, he seems to be at least somewhat trained in cultivation. ]
no subject
Is that... his friend?
What is he doing here? Does his friend even recognize him? Xiao Xingchen isn't sure if he still looks like himself, his body changed as much as it has been already. Maybe his whole appearance has changed.
Despite how tense he is, Xiao Xingchen has enough control over his body to let himself be completely slack as he's handed over, as if he'd been knocked out too hard for even that manhandling to awaken him. He strains to listen for anything else in his surroundings, to find any other hints of where they might be. For now, that might not be of any use to him, but he can at least remember it. One thing he can hear is another person to call out through their gag, struggling to be free. More than even himself, the thought that he was right next to someone he couldn't save... it twists his heart, almost breaking his concentration for anything else.
He doesn't know how he'll find the others again, but once he can, he has to come back and find where they're being taken. For now, he lies and waits quietly for his friend to carry him off. Are they going back to their home?]
no subject
Only then does he start to unwrap him. ]
... Daozhang.
[ He says it like he's trying to wake him up quietly, as if there's someone in the next room over he doesn't want to rouse.
Xue Yang hesitates, but then starts to inspect the wounds on Xiao Xingchen a little more closely, not untying the ropes just yet. If he's not awake, he doesn't want to risk him lashing out immediately upon waking. ]
no subject
When facing the man now, Xiao Xingchen can't hide his distress. He wishes he can ask about so many things. What is this place? What was that place they passed through, like a waking nightmare?
Is he... going to untie him?
Surely he will. He couldn't leave him like this. Surely it's just the horror of everything, this curse... all that has his senses in disarray. That's the only reason why he would even consider doubting his friend's intentions. Although from his tone, Xiao Xingchen can assume they're not safe yet.]
no subject
Daozhang, I need you to stay quiet. Alright?
[ After a moment he reaches forwards and unties the rope that was gagging him. It's just because he doesn't like how those red marks look in the creases of Xiao Xingchen's lips, and because this is probably what someone who actually cares about him would do. ]
I can't take you out of here just yet, but at least I'm the only one who's going to deal with you. We're going to have to play along for now. Understand?
[ Asking for understanding might be too much right now when Xue Yang has explained pretty much nothing, but it's what he nearly demands anyway. ]
no subject
It is definitely a lot to ask, not even knowing what he's supposed to play along with, but does he have any other choice?
He swallows, throat so dry that the act threatens to send him into a coughing fit. Keeping his lips sealed, he tries to not even let that make a sound, expression twisting in discomfort again.]
no subject
I'm supposed to collect pearls from you. That's what kind of place this is. Now that you've transformed, any time you cry, it makes pearls. I have to collect a bunch of those and turn them in every week.
As long as I get the pearls, they shouldn't care what I actually do with you. Just keep your voice down, and don't say anything that could tip them off when the hatch is open.
no subject
They're torturing them for pearls...
If Xiao Xingchen felt the need to push down his own feeling of helplessness for his own sake, understanding what's really happening makes it rush upwards like a pot overboiling. It's a distillation of all the world's cruelty, all at once, benefiting so directly from another's pain--something so evil and intolerable that existing in it for a moment makes him want to thrash around and try to free himself, no matter how fruitless it will surely be. He has to get to that other cultivator, strike him down without a word and free everyone else...!
This thought is soon tempered by knowing that even if he wasn't bound, he knows how that fight will go. So he forces himself to calm down, taking a shuddering breath. He just has to play along for now. Somehow, the two of them will change all this, but being impulsive will only bring more misery.
Finally he nods, before curling up on himself on the stone. Two pearls, red as fresh blood, fall from his bandage. It sickens him that this will benefit their captor. But if it's for his friend, for escaping and delivering some measure of justice someday... crying is easy.
Without speaking, he mouths his words.
"I can make as many as you need."
He's held back so many tears, but he might as well let them out while they can help someone.]
no subject
As he watches the pearls roll across the stone until they settle into a natural divot, a small smile even begins to spread across his face. Isn't this just perfect? Xiao Xingchen is now his captive, and not just that, he's willing. Sure, he probably has some stupid idea about overthrowing this whole operation, and isn't willing to submit to that, but in as much as he's Xue Yang's captive, he's allowing it.
Does he really enjoy spending time with Xue Yang that much? It's a ridiculous thought that he holds himself back from laughing at. Instead he starts to collect the pearls before they scatter too much and make it annoying to get them. He turns one over, studying its red color. Is it because Xiao Xingchen can only cry blood? Probably. ]
Thanks, daozhang. Like this, I can protect you.
no subject
For now, this is all he can do. Rarely has he ever felt impatient, but this helpless feeling combined with a clear hope that matters will improve, he knows all he can do is wait. All will be well if he cooperates while waiting for the opportune time.
He can at least "say" one more thing. Just so he can assure the both of them. If his friend protects him, it can only be because...]
So we can go home. Together.
